The Healthy Communities Act
As of January 1, 2018, cities and counties across California are required to integrate an Environmental Justice Element into their General Plans. This legislative action represents one of the greatest opportunities for planners, public health professionals and the communities they serve to use the best of their capabilities to improve the public's health through planning, community design and engagement.
The California Governor's Office of Planning and Research (OPR) is the official entity the publishes guidance for the individual development of land use planning policy. Recently, OPR completed an update to the General Plan Guidelines, which includes draft SB1000 guidance. The new revision also includes guidance for development of an optional Healthy Communities Element.
